🚨 Urgent Appeal
Systematic Torture Inside Prison 430 Wadi al-Natrun
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center has received an urgent appeal indicating that a number of inmates at Prison 430 Wadi al-Natrun are subjected to severe and ongoing violations, perpetrated by Moamen Awies, the head of prison investigations, and several of his assistants, in incidents that amount to torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment.
🔴 According to the testimony of the inmate's family:
Imran Nagy Imran Abdel Nabi (35 years old), detained in the same prison, is subjected to repeated assaults including:
Severe beating and intentional physical harm
Threats of fabricating new charges against him from within his confinement
Threats of being transferred to remote prisons as a means of punishment and psychological pressure on him and his family
🔴 The family confirmed that they have submitted several official complaints to the Sadat Prosecution regarding the torture the inmate is facing, yet each time he is forced to withdraw the complaint under threat and assault, only to return and face even harsher violations.
🔴 The family also indicated that the inmate is illiterate and that this is exploited to coerce him into signing waivers without his knowledge or free will, with threats of escalating mistreatment if he refuses.
⚖️ These incidents represent serious indications of:
Impunity for the perpetrators
Absence of legal guarantees to protect detainees
Flagrant violation of the Egyptian Constitution and the Code of Criminal Procedure
Contravention of international treaties ratified by Egypt, foremost among them the Convention Against Torture
📌 The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center demands the following:
1️⃣ An urgent and independent investigation into the incidents of torture and violations at Prison 430 Wadi al-Natrun
2️⃣ Suspension of Moamen Awies and his assistants from work until the investigations are completed
3️⃣ Provision of legal protection for inmate Imran Nagy and other witnesses, and prevention of any retaliatory actions against them
4️⃣ Enabling the prosecution to hear the inmate's statements without the presence or interference of the prison administration
5️⃣ Allowing human rights organizations to visit the prison and monitor the conditions of detention
🛑 Silence on torture is complicity in it
And justice does not expire with time.
