⚫ Serious violations inside Rehabilitation and Correction Center (9) at Prison 440 during the month of Ramadan
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center is following with great concern the complaints regarding incidents of storming, searching, and stripping of basic rights inside Rehabilitation and Correction Center (9) at Prison 440 during the blessed month of Ramadan.
▪️ The complaints reported that a national security officer – known inside the prison as Mohamed Al-Lahouni (and said to be named Abdullah Habib) – stormed several wards of political detainees during Ramadan, conducting extensive search campaigns accompanied by degrading treatment of the detainees, which hindered their ability to perform prayers and religious rituals.
▪️ The search campaigns included wards (2 – 3 – 4 – 6 – 8 – 11), amidst a state of tension and dissatisfaction among the detainees.
▪️ A number of detainees were transferred to ward (12), known as the "Revenue Ward," and were reportedly deprived of the most basic living rights, including sufficient food, medical care, blankets, and basic living necessities during the month of Ramadan.
▪️ Reports indicated that the aforementioned officer directly supervised acts of torture inside the Revenue Ward, in addition to issuing orders to place several detainees in "disciplinary" confinement during Ramadan.
▪️ It is noted that "disciplinary" refers to a narrow room (approximately one meter by one meter), devoid of a toilet or basic life necessities, containing only a light blanket, which represents – if proven – a clear violation of the most basic humanitarian standards.
▪️ Amid the continuation of these conditions, the state of anger among the detainees is escalating, with threats of entering a general strike inside the prison in protest against these violations.
⚖️ The Al-Shehab Center affirms that respecting human dignity and the freedom to practice religious rituals, as well as ensuring the minimum living rights and healthcare, are legal obligations that cannot be diminished under any circumstances.
📌 The Al-Shehab Center demands:
To open an urgent and independent investigation into the mentioned incidents.
To stop any practices involving torture or cruel or degrading treatment.
To ensure that detainees can perform religious rituals without restriction.
To end detention in inhumane conditions inside what is known as "disciplinary" or "revenue."
To respond immediately to the legitimate demands of the detainees in a manner that preserves their dignity and safety.
